Kwon’s Martial Arts Students Take Gold in State Tournament

Twelve Marlborough-Area Youth Compete in Taekwondo


Marlborough, Mass., June 23, 2015 – Kwon’s Martial Arts sent 12 students to the
USA Taekwondo Connecticut State Championships taking place on April 11 at the Beckerman Athletic Center in Hamden CT. Eleven students returned with a total of 17 gold, silver or bronze medals in individual, pairs and team sparring and poomsae competitions. Taekwondo poomsae is the style of conduct which expresses directly or indirectly the mental and physical refinements as well as the principles of offense and defense resulting from cultivation of Taekwondo spirit and techniques.

The students awarded medals are as follows:

  • Colby Ryan – Gold Sparring
  • Cristobal Villaroel – Gold Sparring
  • Stefania Zaloumis – Gold Sparring
  • Vinod Pulkayath – Gold Sparring
  • Kosta Zaloumis – Gold Sparring
  • Courtney Sweeney – Bronze Individual and Gold Pairs Poomsae
  • Anton Sibal – Gold Individual and Gold Pairs Poomsae
  • Charlie Meyer – Bronze Individual and Gold Team Poomsae
  • Tejas Maraliga – Bronze Sparring and Gold Team Poomsae
  • Isaiah Doherty – Silver Sparring and Gold Team Poomsae
  • Sophia Zaloumis – Gold Sparring and Bronze Individual Poomsae

The students that competed and placed in this tournament qualified for the USA Taekwondo Nationals for color belts. Black belt students qualify for Nationals in the World Class division with a chance to make the Cadet or Junior National team.

Kwon’s also sent students to the Boston International Taekwondo Championships at Boston College High School on June 13, with the following placing in their individual competitions:

  • Ben Tucker – Silver Sparring, Fourth Sport Poomsae
  • Esha Pagdhal – Bronze Sport Poomsae, Bronze Sparring
  • Colby Ryan – Silver Sparring
  • Isaiah Doherty – Silver Sparring
  • Shakthi Rajesh – Silver Sparring
  • Cristobal Villaroel – Silver Sparring
  • Stefania Zaloumis – Bronze Sparring

Kwon’s Martial Arts provides instruction programs in Taekwondo, Hapkido and kickboxing for children, teens and adults. Currently under new ownership and management, Kwon’s has expanded its curriculum to include classes for adults in fitness/conditioning and women’s self-defense. Kwon’s also regularly schedules special programs such as the recent Arnis weapons seminar.

One of Kwon’s unique offerings is the Black Belt Club for ages 8-14. This class is designed for students who strive for black belt excellence. The accelerated program gives students the added discipline that will bring out the best in them.

Kwon’s offers two new member specials:

  • 20 kickboxing or conditioning classes for $120.
  • Martial arts introduction for two months with uniform for $99.

About Kwon’s Martial Arts

Founded in 1993 by Master Cosmo Bisazza, Kwon’s Martial Arts in Marlborough has been owned and managed by Bob Gustafson, Debra Murphy and Master Viet Nguyen since 2014.

Master Nguyen is the head instructor. He began his martial arts training in 1993 at age 6 under Master Bisazza and continued until 2012 when achieving his 5th Dan. Master Nguyen has been continuing Master Bisazza’s tradition by producing over 40 national caliber athletes, 25 National Medalists, six National Champions and over 20 state champions. Master Nguyen is focused on teaching students the values and principles of martial arts. He states, “If I inspire one person and they go on inspiring others, it makes what I do now worth something meaningful.”
